Subsidised Neurodiversity Training for Middlesex clubs
Middlesex FA Partners with Football Mental Health Alliance to Offer Subsidised Neurodiversity Training for Neurodiversity Celebration Week
Essential Training to Support the Estimated 15-20% of Neurodiverse Players in Grassroots Football
In celebration of Neurodiversity Celebration Week which kicked off on Monday 17th March 2025, Middlesex FA is partnering with the Football Mental Health Alliance to subsidise vital neurodiversity training for grassroots clubs, making it more accessible for all football stakeholders.
The "Understanding Neurodiversity in Grassroots Football" training will equip coaches, referees, players, parents/carers, and volunteers with essential knowledge and practical strategies to support neurodiverse players, creating more inclusive and supportive football environments.
Statistics suggest that between 15-20% of young people live with a neurodevelopmental condition, with ADHD being the most common. This equates to approximately 3-4 players in an average squad of 18 being neurodiverse. As diagnosis rates continue to rise due to improved awareness and diagnostic tools, grassroots clubs must be prepared to meet these needs.
"With thousands of individuals currently waiting for neurodevelopmental diagnoses, and rates predicted to increase in coming years, football clubs need to be equipped to support neurodiverse players and their families," said Danny Matharu, Founder of the Football Mental Health Alliance.
Football clubs are urged to take advantage of this training to better understand neurodevelopmental conditions and proactively support both neurodiverse players and their families. The FMHA emphasises that a lack of understanding often leads to neurodiverse players and their families feeling ostracised or overwhelmed by the football experience. This course is a step towards bridging that gap, empowering clubs to make a lasting difference.
The comprehensive Zoom-based course covers:
• Understanding ADHD, autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions
• Identifying needs and triggers in football settings
• Adapting training methods and communication styles
• Managing match-day scenarios
• Building inclusivity and challenging misconceptions
• Practical strategies for the whole club environment
The training provides a whole-club approach to neurodiversity and mental health, helping neurotypical individuals understand the challenges faced by those with ADHD, autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
