Watford Walking Football Club reach The National FA Cup Final!
Middlesex FA affiliated club, Watford Walking Football, won at the Southern Regional Semi Finals to reach the showpiece finals day event at St George’s Park on Sunday 3rd November.
Joining walking football clubs from around the country, Watford Walking Football got through to the National Finals after success at the Regional Semi Final event on Saturday 12th October at Market Road Football Centre in Islington in the 50 years+ age group.
This success and chance at ultimate glory is just reward for the club who set up in 2015 and regularly compete in the Middlesex FA Walking Football League and the Thames Valley Walking Football League with five different teams.
With such progress and success with their men’s team, Watford aren’t stopping there and are recruiting players to join their newly formed Women’s Walking Football 40+ aged side that will start playing in 2025.
Anyone interested in joining the female over 40s Walking Football sessions at Everett Rovers FC on Mondays & Thursdays can email wwfc.committee@gmail.com
Club Secretary Helen Lovell commented: “We have always welcomed ladies to join our sessions and three of our ladies have already been playing in the mixed leagues alongside our men. We are now on a mission to grow the number of ladies in the club, with the intention to enter a women’s team into a female league. Watford FC Ladies have always competed at a high level in mainstream football, so we believe there are a lot of ladies who have played or trained in the area and who would enjoy training and/or competing in walking football. Once we start to build the number of ladies in the club we can plan some female only coaching and training sessions for all levels. We already have qualified members who are keen to manage and coach the women, so all we need now are some more ladies keen to give it a go!”
Attention now turns to the National Finals at the exclusive St George’s Park venue where Watford will be taking on teams from the likes of Somerset, Lancashire and Northumberland to name a few.
Team Manager Glenn Cato tells us more: “It’s wonderful the FA have organised this tournament with the added bonus of playing the Finals at St George’s Park. At our age it’s an honour to play on the same pitches as the England team and we are all really looking forward to it. We are lucky to have a fantastic set up at Watford Walking Football Club. We have excellent training facilities and the squad is continually growing.”
Keep up to date with their progress by following our social channels as well as on England Football’s Instagram and X feeds.
Watford Walking Football have extra motivation to bring home the cup in memory of their former player Steve Dyett who sadly passed away during the 2023/24 season and was honoured by winning the Middlesex FA Bobby Moore Award at the gala ceremony at Brentford FC in July 2024. You can read more about Steve’s impact on his team and family as part of the Grassroots Awards round up here.
Everyone at Middlesex FA are wishing Helen, Glenn and his team the best of luck to hopefully bring the trophy home!
