HANWELL TOWN UNFORTUNATE TO EXIT FA TROPHY

Jim Taylor

Hanwell Town entertained National League side, Eastleigh in the third round proper of the Isuzu FA Trophy, at their welcoming Powerday Stadium on Tuesday, 10th December.   This match had been scheduled for the previous Saturday but was a victim of storm Darragh.  The fixture was notable because it was the first ever meeting of the two clubs.   Also, it is the furthest that the Geordies have progressed in the FA Trophy competition.

Hanwell Town reached this stage by beating Berkhamsted in a penalty shoot-out, following a 1-1 home draw in the 3rd qualifying round, Hendon 5-0 at home in the 1st round proper and Folkestone Invicta 2-0 away in the 2nd round proper.   Eastleigh were entering the competition in this round.

The Geordies matched their visitors from two levels above them in the FA Pyramid and were unlucky to exit the competition.   The crowd was well entertained with an interesting and very competitive match.   Hanwell Town led at the interval through a stunning goal.   Eastleigh equalised 11 minutes into the second half and won the match with a penalty kick with just over two minutes of normal time remaining.

Hanwell Town went straight onto the attack and Mat Mackenzie’s dipping shot hit the visitors’ crossbar in the first minute.

The Geordies’ keeper, Sam Beasant made his first save in the 7th minute, when he comfortably held Scott Quigley’s curling shot.

Harry Seabrook released Ezekiel Coker Sonukan, who burst into the Eastleigh penalty area but shot too high.

Noa Boutin pushed a freekick just outside the box to Tyrese Shade, who fired wide of the home goal.

Sam Beasant used his legs to make a point-blank save from Alex Stepien-Lwumene, who had been set up by skipper Jake Taylor.

Tyrese Shade then made a run down the wing, cut in and fired against the post.

Tempers started to fray in the 26th minute and the referee had to wield his yellow card 4 times in the space of 2 minutes, starting with Hanwell’s Kameron English for his late challenge on Alex Stepien-Lwumene.   Scott Quigley and Niall Maher (Eastleigh) and Dan Carr (Hanwell) quickly followed him into the referee’s notebook.

The Geordies went ahead in the 29th minute.   The ball was cleared out of the visitors’ penalty box to Joe Wilson, who hit a tremendous shot into the top corner of the net.

Paul Mccallum netted for Eastleigh in the time added on before the interval but the goal was disallowed for offside.   Then, following a very good Hanwell Town corner, the ball was cleared off of the Eastleigh goal-line.

Eastleigh equalised in the 56th minute.   Scott Quigley collected a loose ball and ran through the middle.   Despite the challenges from the advancing Sam Beasant and Harry Seabrook, he managed a shot which, although partially blocked, rolled slowly into the net.

Tyrese Shade showed clever control to create a shooting opportunity but he fired just wide.

Geordies’ defender, Dwayne Duncan went forward and shot wide from outside the penalty box.

Alfie Pendlebury’s lob just cleared the Eastleigh crossbar.

Tyrese Shade, who was now looking very dangerous, netted but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Eastleigh’s Noa Boutin fired across the goal and just wide of the far post.

In the 88th minute, Jai Semenyo burst into the home penalty box and took the ball towards the by-line.   Sam Beasant dived for the ball.   Jai Semenyo went down and was awarded the inevitable penalty.   Chris Maguire converted to put Eastleigh into the next round.
